Mid-priced jackets have a reputation for lackluster breathability. Not the Modis, which leverages a light fabric featuring a 2.5-layer Pertex Shield and two-way pit zips for uncommon climate control at this price. After enduring thunderstorms, sleet, and 60mph winds on New Hampshire’s Mt. Washington, our testers kept the Modis on into the low 60s without sweating it out. Extended cuffs keep baselayer sleeves protected, and a snug-cinching hood also impressed: “It was easy to seal drips out, and the brim kept rain off my face even in a deluge,” says a tester. Dings: A cuff strap ripped when our tester yanked it while pulling the jacket off. The women’s version also lacks a chest pocket.
