Our take Two years ago, we called REI’s 10°F version of this bag a category killer. Well, another one bites the dust with this bag, which has average weight and shoulder circumference (63 inches) for its class, but costs less. “I’m a gear nerd who builds spreadsheets to compare specs,” says one tester. “This was great on paper, but I was more impressed with how I could spin around inside without feeling confined like I do in other mummies.”
The details Like the 10°F Magma that we gave a 2017 Editors’ Choice Award, variable baffle spacing optimizes the volume of down needed in key areas (wider baffles over your torso, for example). REI also reduced stitching in areas where insulation is less important (like your legs), which cuts the number of baffles and corresponding weight. The Magma has a full-length zip with an anti-snag cover, as well as a draft muff.
Trail cred “This is both ultralight and roomy—I could fit two Nalgenes full of hot water by my hips and feet when I pressed the bag well beyond its temp rating,” one tester says.
