When you’re out for a long weekend backpacking trip, you don’t need all-day comfort. You need multi-day comfort. And that’s what the Ahnu Montara is designed for. A compressed EVA shock-dispersion plate in the forefoot shields your feet from jagged rocks and the jarring which can ache by the end of the day. Stability is top-notch, even with heavy weekend loads of over 30 pounds.
The eVent lining is completely waterproof yet breathed well enough that testers never complained of sweaty feet, even when temperatures hit the 80s on a warm fall hike in Texas’ Chisos Mountains. The oiled leather upper is soft and supple, and held up well despite lots of use in rough terrain. The lugged sole handles both smooth and slippery surfaces so well that one tester described it as having “gecko traction”. The high cuff provides ankle support and does a solid job of keeping out trail debris. Best for long days followed by more long days. $130; 1 lb. 12 oz.; w’s 6-11; ahnu.com
