Unlike some shells we've tested, which use heavier exterior fabrics, this lightweight jacket maximizes the benefit of eVent's highly breathable membrane. The Repel kept Rocky Mountain editor Steve Howe dry inside and out during two weeks of map scouting in Glacier National Park. "I huffed my way up Pitamakin Pass on a 40°F day in fog and windblown rain," he reports. "But the Repel shed water and kept me sweat-free, despite the overwhelming humidity." He says the combination of eVent and mesh-lined chest pocket/core vents makes the Repel ideal for high-exertion activities in wet weather. A unique pocket in the lumbar region turns into a fanny pack that stows the jacket; the zipper was unnoticeable under a fully loaded pack. Cinchable cuffs and a well-fitting hood round out a complete, if pricey, package.
