Gear Review: Sugio MidZero Zip Jersey

A midweight base layer for cool to cold weather hiking

The Sugoi MidZero Zip Jersey has a fleecy, brushed interior that kept our tester cozy on chilly fall mornings in New York’s Great Range, but the exterior is satin-smooth for snag-free layering beneath a shell. Worn without a jacket, the blend of polyester and Spandex also proved more windproof than regular fleece.

The long cut (especially in back) kept it from riding up beneath a pack, even when a tester scrambled up ladders on Vermont’s Long Trail. The flat seams, positioned across the sternum (not on the shoulders), felt comfortable under pack straps. “It breathed well, wicked sweat well, and never restricted mobility,” reported one tester, who wore the MidZero for Nordic skiing as well as cool-weather hiking. $85; 13 oz.
