Gear Review: MontBell Tachyon Anorak Jacket

An extremely light and extremely packable windshell.

The only problem with a windshell this light and packable? It literally disappears in my pack. The force-field-thin, seven-denier nylon fabric, combined with a pocketless pullover design, means the Tachyon squishes into the smallest spaces.

On hikes in the Rockies and California’s Trinity Alps, it blocked wind and shed light rain like a heavier shell (MontBell rates the DWR at 100 washes; we haven’t seen any drop-off after nearly six months of use). Like most unlined nylon shells, the fabric can feel clammy next to skin. Bonus: A hood with drawcord enhances protection. Add the Dynamo Wind Pant for $69.

Best For

Ultralight protection from moderate wind and light rain
