Gear Review: Marmot Mavericks 20

This hoodless, semi-rectangular bag was the roomiest in our test.

This hoodless, semi-rectangular bag has lots of roll-around room for broad or restless sleepers and a unique dual-zipper system that makes it versatile in warmer temps. A short zipper on one side and a full, wraparound zip on the other means you can peel down the top third of the bag or unfurl the whole thing, quilt style.

The SpiraFil insulation (similar in its mix of fibers to Eureka’s Rteq) and DWR-coated polyester shell rebuffed heavy condensation on five wet nights along the southern AT and kept our tester warm into the mid-30s. But below that, the lack of a hood and the roomy cut proved limiting. It packs down to medium-watermelon-size in its compression sack, but it’s heavy for a three-season sack.
