Gear Review: Easton CTR-80 Trekking Poles

An all-carbon trekking pole that absorbs shock through the grip.

With the CTR-80, Easton takes an innovative approach to shock absorption. Instead of a spring or coil in the tip, this all-carbon pole features vibration dampening in the grip: A cylinder of gel reduces impact rebound and cushions hands from repeated pounding. “Unlike some carbon poles, these still look brand new after weeks of hiking, thanks in part to their thicker diameter,” reports our Colorado tester. Note: Smaller testers found the grip oversized, and the swing weight felt cumbersome due to the pole’s larger diameter size. $140; 1 lb. 7 oz.;
