Best Trail Runner
We're not easy on trail-running shoes: In addition to runs, we expect them to bear up through a lot of tough dayhikes. We did both with this one, logging hard miles from Arizona's Mt. Humphreys to New Mexico's Sangre de Cristo Range–and it rose to the top. "This is by far my favorite trail runner," one tester said. "Like most people, I overpronate [an inward rolling of the foot], and these are the only sneakers that keep me pain-free after five miles."
What's the secret? Outstanding stability from a broad heel platform, a three-quarter-length plastic shank, and a rigid heel cup. And thumbs up on the gel cushioning and arch support. We recommend them for hiking with loads up to 20 pounds. Best for medium-volume feet. $90; 1 lb. 11 oz. Asics.com
