Most people would get offended when their boyfriend compares them to a dog. But when I ask my partner if he’s seen my ball and he rolls his eyes and tells me I’m acting like a golden retriever, I choose to interpret it as a testament to my dedication to self-care and post-hike recovery. Besides, I’m not about to stop asking for help finding my Trigger Point MB1 Massage Ball; it’s among my most prized possessions.

When I first received the MB1 as a gift, I rolled my eyes, thinking it a glorified lacrosse ball. But at just 1.2 ounces—or roughly 20 percent the weight of a regulation lacrosse ball—, it’s lightweight and easy to pack in a backpack toplid, meaning t now comes on all my backpacking trips. The 2.5-inch diameter makes it the perfect size to massage smaller muscles and hard-to-reach spots like hips and calves. And the MB1’s hard foam is firm enough to release the most stubborn knots, but has just enough grip to hold it in place whether you’re rolling out against a rock at the trailhead or a hardwood floor at home. At just $15, it’s both cheaper than most foam rollers and way more effective.

When I whipped out my MB1 on the last day of a bikepacking trip in northern Montana this past summer, one of my buddies gawked with jealousy.

“You’ve been holding out on us!” he said.

That’s right. After all, this is my ball. And I’m not about to share.
