Our take Get the comfort of a typical trail runner and the ankle protection of a midcut boot for only a few additional ounces. Built on a running last, the Lone Peak 3.0 Mid feels just like its low-top counterparts with Altra’s well-loved FootShape toebox (it’s huge to accommodate toe splay), a zero-drop platform, and super-cushioned EVA midsole. Our testers praised the comfort on hikes around the rocky Flatirons in Boulder, Colorado. But a high ankle cuff gives these boots more protection than a true trail runner.
The details The Mid uses Polartec’s waterproof/breathable membrane, called NeoShell. It breathed well enough on a muggy trek through Colombia, but one of our testers wished the tongue gusset continued higher up the shoe—an ankle-deep puddle on the páramo did him in.
Trail cred “They have more traction and support than any other shoe in the same weight class,” says our gear editor, who wore them on treks in the Front Range and South America.
