Can I safely purify water inside my CamelBak hydration reservoir?
Submitted by – S.R., Lakeside, AZ
To be sure, I called the lab techs at Wisconsin Pharmacal, the makers of Potable Aqua iodine and chlorine dioxide tablets (Disclosure: I serve as a first-aid consultant for Wisconsin Pharmacal). They approved CamelBak and other plastic hydration bladders for use with their chemical treatments and other tablets that do the same job. They did warn that iodine will discolor the bladder, and that it’s long-term use may degrade certain types of plastics, shortening the reservoir’s lifespan. But because the iodine sticks to the plastic interior and doesn’t flake off, there’s no threat to your health.
