Winter Camping at Mount Rainier National Park
Snowshoe to a scenic high balcony
When it comes to winter campsites, Indian Henry’s Hunting Ground, a broad plateau on Mount Rainier’s southwest shoulder, has the goods. High enough to offer spectacular views and above treeline options for day trips, it still holds sheltered coves for bad weather days. Morning scenes here can be truly mesmerizing — the sun burns off clouds, and the big peak emerges from its shrouds. Snowshoe six miles up the Kurtz Creek Trail to Mount Ararat and you’ll find protected tent sites are just beneath that knoll.
