Vasque Canyonlands Ultradry
Most versatile footwear from the Fall/Winter 2018 Gear Guide.

If there’s such a thing as a year-round boot, this is it. “I wore it for everything: scrambling on slickrock, punching through snow, plowing through mud, and even carrying a violin up a mountain,” said our Washington tester after 150 miles in the Canyonlands. Although the boot isn’t insulated, its heavy nubuck upper kept her warm down to 20°F on snowshoe excursions in the Central Cascades.
THE DETAILS
Though it looks like your standard brown-leather hiker, the Canyonlands has the heart of a burlier mountaineering boot, with a TPU shank that kept us stable when hauling a 35-pound load on uneven terrain. The Vibram Lite Wolf rubber outsole with chevron-shaped lugs held fast on hardpack, and our tester felt secure during a climb of Washington’s Webb Mountain that featured rotten snow and class 3 moves. A waterproof membrane and an over-the-ankle cuff kept our feet dry when we stomped through slush and mud puddles.
TRAIL CRED
“Over three days in Utah’s Salt Creek Canyon, the Canyonlands provided support and stability through a gnarly mix of sand and boulders, and I emerged blister-free,” our tester says.
