Trail Runner Review: Merrell Pursuit Shield

This low-cut's shallow tread grips well through it all

During a week in the Trinity Alps, our tester scrambled up steep hills slick with loose dirt and several years’ worth of fallen leaves, and he says this low-cut’s shallow tread gripped well through it all. The plastic-reinforced fabric upper is stable and supportive compared to the softest lightweights, and the shoe got only a little chewed up (on the sides of the outsole) after bashing through a forest full of deadfall. The Vibram sole flexes easily in the forefoot, making it best for moving fast with a light load. There’s no waterproof liner, so choose this shoe for its breathability, not weather protection. Best for medium-width, medium-volume feet.
