The North Face Superlight 15 Sleeping Bag

Packability

Thanks to the ultralight insulation, 15-denier shell, and included compression sack, this bag packs down to 8 by 12 inches, the size of two loaves of bread.

Fit

Many lightweight bags are notoriously slim, but not this one. The 61-inch shoulder and 55-inch hip circumferences are bigger than average, and our broad-shouldered, 6-foot tester had adequate elbowroom. The footbox also received compliments for its roominess from our Utah tester, who normally eschews mummies in favor of semi-rectangular bags. Option: The bag is also available in a shorter length (fits up to 5’6”).

Shell

The hood and footbox employ water-resistant, 15-denier ripstop nylon. “We set up camp in a damp valley in a Turkish coastal range, and I slept with my feet pressed against a sopping wet tent wall all night,” says one of our editors. “The fill stayed dry, and I never noticed the cold.”

Fill

Credit the 800-fill Hungarian goose down’s large, dense clusters for providing our tester with a comfortable night’s sleep during an unexpected 11°F night in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. “I added a puffy after the temps dropped into the teens, but otherwise I slept soundly,” says one Colorado tester.

Hood

The hood lacks a full draft collar, but we didn’t care. We could easily cinch it down to blowhole size with the dual drawcords.

Center Zip

Open the 28-inch center zip and sit up to do basic tent chores without getting out of your bag. The shortened zipper saves weight, but ventilation is limited in warmer weather. Bonus for side sleepers (or those who toss and turn): You’re not stuck sleeping on an uncomfortable zipper coil.

Baffles

Baffle chambers in the lower half of the bag reduce weight by using fewer interior mesh materials, while the center zip prevents down from migrating to one side of the bag.
