Tent Review: Six Moon Designs Europa 05

A weather- and bug-proof tent of negligible weight.

June in Glacier National Park might not seem like the ideal time and place for an ultralight tent, but this single-wall’s siliconized nylon and bathtub floor kept testers dry through prolonged rain and a foggy, supersaturated bluster. A hoop pole makes the foot area roomy, while the A-frame front pitches with a trekking pole to save weight. An awning (essentially a half-vestibule) keeps rain off the mesh door and protects stored gear in straight-down showers, while perimeter mesh minimizes condensation. There’s stretch-out space for tall campers and room for some extra gear, but sit-up height is limited. Being an ultralight tunnel design, the Europa performs best in sheltered campsites, but it has a lot of weatherproof, bug-proof living space for its negligible weight. One quibble: The guylines should be longer.
