Tent Review: Hilleberg Jannu

Testers give the Jannu two thumbs up, despite wanting more space

After a midwinter traverse of New Hampshire’s Presidential Range, our testers gave the Jannu two enthusiastic thumbs up. Setup is a snap–even with mittens on-because the body and rainfly of this double-wall, 2-person tent are connected (via small toggles). Just slide the poles into the exterior corner pockets and clip them to the tent. You can separate the two components, but it’s a bit involved–and largely unnecessary. Pitched above treeline, the Jannu was rock-solid in 50+ mph gusts, thanks to well-placed guyouts with secure tension locks on the cords. At the Jannu’s apex is a pizza-sized vent, which–in combination with the mesh panel on the door–provided ample airflow. Floor space is ample, but our two average-sized guys would have liked more headroom. The roomy and weather-tight vestibule makes a protected cooking or staging area. A gripe: Low doorway clearance makes entry/exit a hands-and-knees crawl.
