Sunday Afternoons Ultra Adventure Storm
Editors' choice for sun coverage from the 2018 Fall/Winter Gear Guide.

When fickle mountain weather was on the itinerary, we reached for the Ultra Adventure Storm. The hat, which folds down to the size of a checkbook, is made of a wispy nylon/ polyester material that belies its properties: It’s 100 percent water- proof and boasts the maximum 50 UPF sun protection. The 3 1/4-inch brim shielded us from snow, rain, and especially sun, without getting in the way of our towering toplids (the 6-inch-long neck cape protects with- out sticking out). Three wires around the circumference of the brim rein- force it in heavy precip, which we appreciated on a 30°F day in the Crested Butte backcountry when it was nuking wet snow. Beyond that, it’s all in the details: reflective trim for high-viz, a glove-friendly draw- cord, an adjustable chinstrap, and a wicking liner. And, though our dads would go crazy for this hat, we think ultralight protection is style enough.
