Snickers

Editors' choice for snacking from the 2018 Fall/Winter Gear Guide.

None

The one and only. We’ve been throwing a Snickers (or several) into our food bags for decades now, and adding them to the shopping cart is as much a part of a backpacking trip as getting a permit.

Now let’s get something out of the way: Snickers is candy. But at 250 calories, it’s more calorically dense than most chocolate bars, and its mix of refined sugar, chocolate, nougat, and peanuts provides carbs and fats for both instant and sustained energy on the trail. It’s a bonk-buster and morale-booster in a brown wrapper. And even when bar fatigue sets in, Snickers seems to elude it. Eat them warm, gnaw on them frozen, whatever—when a Snickers goes down, your mood and energy level go up.

Weight: 1.9 oz.
