Sierra Designs Night Cap 20°F
The sleeping bag with best features of 2021
The zipperless Night Cap eliminates hardware headaches. With a crescent-shaped opening—it starts at sleeper’s left collarbone, curves down the torso, and crosses to the bag’s right side just above the hips—it’s sealed by tucking in an oversized, quilted flap (attached on the right side). The flap wraps across your torso and tucks around your left side, where a three-dimensional “pocket” fits like a cap on your shoulder, anchoring it in place. With shoulder and hip circumferences measuring 60 and 58 inches for men, and 58 and 56 inches for women, peaceful side- and back-sleepers loved the flap feature, but one restless tester reported that the bag felt too loose and drafty: She had to re-tuck the flap inside during a 24°F night on the shore of Colorado’s Cottonwood Lake. (Flip side: The Night Cap is oh-so-easy to enter and exit, even with the hood completely cinched.) A self-sealing foot vent—two overlapping pieces of fabric at the base of the footbox—lets you slide your feet out and back in without using your hands and reliably prevents drafts from sneaking in. The synthetic Night Cap packs down to the size of a small watermelon.
