Model: Sharp Edge

Our take If there’s one place you don’t want to stop and futz with your layers, it’s halfway up a no-fall slope. The Sharp Edge’s breathability let us keep chugging through the gamut of winter and spring conditions without overheating—from the single digits in Colorado’s Weminuche Wilderness to rainy, 50°F days in Virginia—all while feeling Goldilocks-comfortable. The key to the Sharp Edge’s airy feel is Pertex Shield AP, a three-layer material with an air-permeable membrane that’s riddled with micropores. The hydrophobic openings actively push sweat out (in an action that resembles wicking), and let vapor easily escape. Pit zips aid moisture management even more.

The details The Sharp Edge comes fully loaded with ski-friendly features, including two mesh-backed chest pockets that are big enough for skins; a helmet-compatible hood (with wire brim) that can be rolled down when not in use; and wide cuffs that slide easily over bulky winter gloves. The ultrasoft, stretchy fabric felt all-day comfortable, even over a short-sleeve baselayer in warmer temps. Internal pockets are big enough to hold a 1-liter Nalgene without compromising mobility. (Note: Testers also loved the Sharp Edge’s companion pants)

Trail cred “On a climb up California’s Mt. Shasta, I encountered 60-mph winds at the summit,” says one tester. “The Sharp Edge cut the gusts enough that I barely noticed the chill, letting me focus solely on my footing.” rab.equipment
