Rab Flashpoint

Backpackers who are willing to pay more for added features will find a lot to like in this softshell.

Brand: Rab

Model: Flashpoint Jacket

Breathability

The Flashpoint pulls off its ultralight, 3-layer design with a thin, hydrophilic PU membrane. But without venting options, we found it less breathable than other softshells.

Ventilation

None, except the main front zipper.

Protection

“Insanely high level of protection for the weight,” reports a Virginia tester. The Flashpoint’s generous features—longer sleeves that cinch with thin Velcro strips, a long, adjustable hem that locks out breezes—made it bomber in everything from downpours to misty, windy weather.

Hood

Fine-tune fit (over low-profile helmets) with three toggle cords (one at the back, two at the chin).

Packability

The Flashpoint packs down to the size of a large orange.

Durability

The Flashpoint’s 7-denier nylon fabric held up well to a season of typical hiking and backpacking, but it’s not the best choice for serious off-trail travel or mountaineering.

Pockets

You get one generous chest pocket big enough for your smartphone, keys, a folded map, and a bar.
