Patagonia Tsali 3.0 Trail Runner Review

Versatile trail runner is perfect for the pavement and trails.

Brand: Patagonia Gear Reviews

Model: Tsali 3.0

Why we like it For most of us, there’s always a little pavement between home and trail.

Protection For mixed road and trail use, your feet need substantial protection above (against rocks and other debris) and below (from pavement pounding). The Tsali has a healthy 27mm of EVA cushion under the heel and 17mm under the ball of the foot—the latter is substantial for a road shoe and more than most trail runners, providing enough shock absorption to withstand the impact of running on pavement. The upper, made of mesh and perforated nylon, covers the lower lace loops and keeps dirt and other debris from getting in. A thin TPU film connects the heel, lacing system, and toes, providing structural support and torsional stability.

Traction A combo of V-shaped lugs running down the middle of the outsole (good for gravel and mud) and eyebrow-shaped lugs on the perimeter (they disperse contact area on flat surfaces) is as versatile as the protection.

Fit “Out of the gate I noticed the roomy, comfortable fit for my wide forefeet and long toes,” one tester says. “As I racked up miles, I appreciated how securely the upper held my feet in place, which prevented tendon fatigue.”

Fave feature The unique lacing system effectively spreads pressure across the upper. Toward the top of the tongue, the laces loop through nylon straps that connect the TPU film and the tongue. The result: no internal foot movement and great stability on any surface.
