Keep your hands toasty during high-output activities with these lightweight running gloves.
Brand: Outdoor Research
Model: Overdrive Convertible Gloves
Our take: It’s every mountain runner’s dilemma: Risk freezing your digits off up high, or carry gloves you might not need? The featherweight Overdrives render that question moot, with a thin softshell mitt that insulates your fingers when you need it, and stows away in the wrist when you don’t. The overmitt, which has four-way stretch, kept out light snow and wintry mix without making our hands clammy, and also features rubberized accents on the palm for gripping phones and water bottles. “I have the sweatiest hands of anyone I know,” says our trail-running tester. “But no matter how hard I worked on the uphill, the light softshell knit never got more than slightly moist.” The entire glove packs down to just larger than a golf ball, small enough to stow in the pocket of a running vest.
Trail cred: “Dexterity is great. I was able to tie my shoes and open gel packets without taking the gloves off on a 10-mile, late-spring trail run in Colorado’s Elk Meadow Park,” one tester says.
