Hiking Boots

Outside Gear Spotlight: Salewa Mountain Trainer Mid GTX

Sometimes, you need a boot that can stand up to the toughest terrain.

This gear and more like it are now available in the new Outside Shop, where Outside+ members receive a $50 discount on qualified purchases of $100 or more*. Learn more about Outside+ here.

Light, durable trail runners take ounces off of hikers’ feet, cutting down on fatigue and making the miles move by quicker. But sometimes, you just need boots as tough as the terrain. The Salewa Mountain Trainer Mid GTX is made to handle the roughest trails (and lack thereof), thanks to its beefy 1.6-millimeter-thick leather upper and mountaineering-boot-inspired design. Over three months of hiking through the Alaskan tundra that would have shredded lesser footwear, these boots barely suffered a scratch. “A sturdy chassis kept us steady during side-hilling, the extra-thick leather upper withstood moraine-field scrapes, and to-the-toe lacing let us make precise movements,” our tester reported. Nice touch: metal lacing behind the ankle helped keep us stable under loads of up to 50 pounds.
