Nemo Moki

Everybody wants a lavish basecamp shelter in winter, but nobody wants to hump the extra weight. The three-person Moki delivers everything you want and nothing you don’t. This redesigned, freestanding shelter has ample room for a trio plus gear for less than 9 pounds. The trick? Nearly half the canopy is mesh, allowing for the largest floor (50.6 square feet) in the test with no weight penalty. It sleeps a bit colder than conventional four-season tents, but our tester didn’t mind. “It’s actually fun to hang out in this tent because it feels like an open-air palace,” he said after a successful summit bid on 22,841-foot Aconcagua in Argentina. Two doors and a single zip-off, 12-square-foot vestibule complete the package.
THE DETAILS
Five aluminum poles create a taut pitch that withstood 40-mph winds in Colorado’s Roosevelt National Forest. Drawback: “With chilly hands, it’s tough to force some of the fly-pole connection points, which are a tight fit,” the tester says. “I couldn’t set this tent up on my own.” Two vents open from the inside. “Temps dropped to the high teens at basecamp around 19,000 feet, and we barely saw any moisture,” said our tester after two weeks on Aconcagua.

“Each of the stake points has a bit of stretch, so the tent doesn’t jostle when the wind blows,” our tester says. “In high winds, it’s the quietest tent I’ve ever slept in.”
