Why we like it Alpine storms can’t shake this four-season shelter. It’s no ultralight, but the strength-to-weight ratio is hard to beat.

Stormproofing Your typical dome offers four points of ground contact, but the Tangent uses forked corners that triple its grip for stability in high wind: 12 stakeouts and a low-profile, 39-inch peak height helped it withstand gusts up to a frightening 80 mph (pitched into the wind) on Alaska’s Turnagain Arm.

Livability Living space is spartan, with a 29-square-foot floor and just enough headroom to let our 6’2” tester sit up. But storage is generous compared to other light-and-fast alpine shelters: Two vestibules (10 square feet each) store climbing gear, and two interior pockets hold eyewear. But like many minimalist mountaineering tents, ventilation is merely adequate (condensation collected inside the fly on 40°F nights).

Smart feature Reflective fly tape makes it easy to see at night.
