Mountain Hardwear Super Chockstone Jacket Review

If you're hard on jackets, this Mountain Hardwear is for you.

Brand: Mountain Hardwear

Model: Super Chockstone Jacket

[light and tough]

Why we like it
Gear abusers, take note: This light, small-packing shell handled bouldering, bushwhacking, snowshoeing, and Nordic skiing without sustaining a scratch.

Durability The Super Chockstone employs high-tenacity nylon fibers, which are stronger than standard threads, for extra abrasion resistance. “I was concerned about how durable this would be, because it’s so thin and light,” says a tester. “But it had zero rips or snags through miles of off-trail forest travel in Indiana and Wyoming.”

Protection The DWR-treated shell kept testers dry in extended light rain and all-day snow in Yellowstone and provided enough protection for cross-country skiing into the teens with wind gusts up to 35 mph.

Breathability
The double-weave fabric (91 percent nylon, 9 percent elastane) breathed well for testers in everything from cool, humid conditions in the Hoosier National Forest while they hiked with heavy packs to extended ski and snowshoe tours into the low teens.

Fit The body-hugging cut leaves room for a thin layer or two, and the slim shape makes it comfortable under a hardshell when precip picks up. And the stretchy fabric preserves full range of motion.

nitpick The knit polyester on the cuffs gets wetter (and dries more slowly) than the woven nylon that makes up the rest of the shell.

$135; 13 oz. (m’s L); m’s S-XXL, w’s XS-XL; mountainhardwear.com
