Mountain Equipment Glacier 400 Super Light Sleeping Bag

An armored shell protects this weather-resistant sleeping bag from all but the worst conditions.

Brand: Mountain Equipment

Model: Glacier 400 Super Light Sleeping Bag

Weather resistance

While camping sans tent in the Catskills, we woke up to a layer of frost every morning, but the 30-denier nylon was unfazed. Its water resistance is a result of two features: The densely woven fabric is inherently more protective than standard nylon, and it’s coated with an ultrathin layer of waterproof PU (which is slightly lighter than its laminate counterparts). The seams and zipper, however, are not sealed.

Warmth

Our editor-in-chief loved the five-panel hood (many sleeping bags have only four) with 725-fill duck down. Extra paneling gives it enough structure to “float” around your head, creating a halo of warmth. “I’m a cold sleeper,” he says, “so I really noticed the difference when temps dipped into the upper 20s.”

Attention to detail

Our veteran guide tester was impressed by the snag-free zipper thanks to clever stitch lines pulling the zipper away from the lining and face fabric. He also gave high marks for the snaps—not itchy Velcro—on the draft collar.
