Support The board-lasted midsole (see page 47 for explanation), made of dual-density EVA with a denser insert in the arch, easily supported a 50-pound load for a tester in Alaska’s Gates of the Arctic National Park. “I hiked through tundra, snow, rivers, and rocky off-trail terrain, and I never wished for heavier-duty boots,” he says. “The midsole did an excellent job of absorbing shock and preventing ankle roll, even when I piggybacked my 128-pound girlfriend from raft to shore and had to negotiate uneven, submerged rocks.”
Comfort Memory foam in the uppers around the ankle, instep, and shin provide excellent cushion.
Fit “I have wide feet, and the roomy toe box felt so comfortable,” our tester says. Plus, nylon straps slide through the upper and connect the laces to the midsole, which lets you adjust the volume much better than with a standard lacing system. “I took these straight to the Arctic with zero break-in and no camp shoes. And I had no blisters or hotspots—pretty remarkable.”
Protection Testers’ feet stayed dry (and never sweaty) in a range of conditions, from balmy Southern California to the Arctic, thanks to a breathable, synthetic, Gore-Tex-lined upper.
