Want to fly business class on a coach fare? Get the Cosmic. It saves on cost with 550-fill down, but it has sufficient fluff to provide warmth right down to the bottom of its 20°F temp rating. When a late fall night dropped to 19°F, a tester in North Carolina’s Appalachains cinched up the hood and went back to sleep. And the cut is generous: “I had more than enough room to tumble and spin without tangling up,” says our 5’11”, 175-pound tester.
The bag packs to the size of two footballs, slightly larger than more expensive 20°F down bags, but it still fits easily in a weekend pack. The draft collar sealed out wind that howled under a tarp edge, but a tester in New Hampshire on a warmer, windless night said that the collar’s loose end scratched his face. The durable 50-denier shell fabric showed no abrasion after throw-down shelter camping in New Hampshire’s White Mountains. And don’t worry about the less expensive 550-fill duck down causing you to shiver.
While pricier, 800-fill goose down bags are significantly lighter and more packable for the warmth they provide, the Cosmic’s temperature rating is honest, and the bargain price makes up for the extra weight and bulk. $110; 2 lbs. 9 oz.; 20°FFor the warm weather camper who wants extra elbow room, the semi-rectangular Coromell features insulation throughout, unzips into a blanket, and doesn’t require a companion sleeping pad.
