Julbo Shield
Best glacier glasses from the Fall/Winter 2018 Gear Guide.

Two for the price of one: These sunnies double as glacier glasses, thanks to removable shields on the temples. The side fins provide additional protection to save your eyes from glare and wind. (“I even stopped packing goggles on fair-weather day tours,” one tester says.) Back at the car, remove the side shields by pinching the softer plastic to disengage the pins and boom, everyday shades. Julbo offers the Shield in six different lenses; we liked the Cameleon Reactiv Photochromic best: It ranges from a light persimmon (about 33 percent visual light transmission) to dark, almost-black orange (less than 5 percent). “My eyes were never strained on a day that started at dawn below treeline and ended up on top of a 12,000-foot peak on a bluebird day,” one tester said after a five-day trip in Idaho’s Pioneer Mountains.
TRAIL CRED
“With the shields on, the frames cupped my eyes enough to block glare and ground gusts on Andrews Glacier in Rocky Mountain National Park without fogging,” another tester says.
