Breathability

The mesh trampoline-style backpanel kept then nylon packbag a full quarter inch off our backs, and the vented lumbar region kept things cool. “I could feel a slight breeze on my back and my shirt never wetted out,” said a tester after a hot hike in Sedona, Arizona.

Organization

The small capacity—just 18 liters—helps the pack disappear on your back, but the Salvo’s efficient use of space made it a tester favorite in town and on trail. “The exterior features are ideal,” says a tester who loaded up gear for herself and her dog for a 10-mile circumnavigation of Cline Butte, Oregon. Ding: The various pockets add to the overall weight, making it too heavy to bring along as a summit pack on weekend treks.

Stability

Testers liked the webbing hipbelt for stabilizing loads up to 10 pounds, but it can detach when you don’t need it.
