Costa Pescador

OUR TAKE Take plastic out of the ocean and wear it on your face. The Pescador, one of four frames in Costa’s Untangled Collection, features large, square nylon frames made from 100 percent recycled fishing nets. It has mineral glass lenses (like a watch face), which are clearer and more resistant to scratches than plastic. They’re available in four tints; we liked the copper for contrast on treed trails. (Note: Glass lenses can shatter. We never had an issue after a season of hard use and haphazard packing, but take care not to sit on these shades.) Rubber pads on the temples and nose bridge kept the Pescadors in place when we started sweating, but glass lenses up the weight, so consider using a retainer if you plan to run or cycle with them. (The Pescadors are also available with side shields for $269.)
TRAIL CRED “With the copper lenses, I could quickly scan for terrain changes in the singletrack when I was mountain biking the Airline Trail in Aspen,” one tester says. “But when I broke above treeline, they were dark enough for bright-light conditions.”
