Gear Review: TSL Trek Short Gaiter

These zippered gaiters keep out crusty debris.

[snowfield bargain]

“Primo for postholing through crud,” says one tester, who used the Treks in Norway and Colorado. Credit a grippy rubber bottom band that forms a tight seal around boots, keeping the gaiters securely in place even when you’re stomping through crust, while also locking out snow and debris. The 420-denier, polyurethane-coated nylon outer material is waterproof and tough enough to combat crampon scuffs, but the seams aren’t taped, so don’t expect protection from prolonged moisture.

Bonus: The zippered front closure and Velcro storm flap seal fast. Bummer: Breathability is average; look elsewhere for summer gaiters. We found the 10-inch model sufficiently high (available in two taller versions). $30; 6 oz. (unisex short); tsloutdoor.com
