Gear Review: Therm-a-Rest LuxuryLite UltraLite Cot

Get a good night's sleep with this luxury cot from Therm-a-Rest.

If back pain (or preference) makes you grumble about sleeping on the ground, this slick cot, which weighs just a hair more than some plush sleeping pads, will change the way you think about roughing it. “On a float trip on the Green River, my kids fought over this cot because it allowed them to sleep under the stars, but stay safely suspended a few inches above scorpion territory,” says a tester. Another added: “For back comfort, I normally use a fairly thick pad. But this cot, alone, kept me well-supported and kink-free.” (Add a sleeping pad, as one tester did, for a truly luxurious snooze.)

Twelve nylon disks serve as self-leveling feet, suspending the cot four inches off the ground, with a 24 x 74-inch sheet of no-stretch nylon pulled taut by collapsible aluminum cross poles. Assembly is quick (less than four minutes) and simple. But it’s best for slender frames—bigger testers found it narrow—and it’s spendy. $230; 2 lbs. 12 oz.; thermarest.com
