Gear Review: The North Face Aleutian 20

This mummy costs only $89 and weighs just over three pounds!

This mummy is the least spendy bag tested, but it’s also the lightest and our all-around favorite. “The temperature rating is accurate, and the fit is dialed,” says one Colorado tester. The hydrophobic hollow-core polyester insulation combined with the DWR-treated ripstop nylon shell impressed a tester who battled major tent condensation and dampness. “One night I worm crawled [in the bag] into six inches of wet snow to adjust my tent guy line,” he says. “Afterward, I just dusted the bag off and conked out.” The tapered cut proved thermally efficient without being too confining. The women’s version “fit me like a hug,” says our petite AT thru-hiker. Our only gripe: no draft collar, and it’s bulky (15”x8”) when stuffed.
