Gear Review: SOG PowerAssist Multitool
Do it all with this easy-access, customizable multitool from SOG.
[multitool]
Do you feel naked in the backcountry without a heavy-duty gadget? This multitool has all of the fundamentals you’ll need to handle most outdoor jobs (needle-nose pliers, wire cutters, a couple of knives, and screwdrivers), but a few features make it stand out from the crowd. For instance, you can access the locking smooth and serrated blades without unfolding the main kit. “Most multitools require two hands to get to the knife function, but I really appreciated that I could pull this one out of my pocket and flick it open with just my thumb,” says one tester.
Credit thumbstuds, which provide traction, and SOG’s Assisted (spring-loaded) Technology, which only requires a slight nudge to unfurl the blade. Additionally, all components (not just the knives) fully lock for heavy-duty operation. “No more having a screwdriver fold in on my fingers when I’m doing repairs!” says one tester. Bonus: You can buy additional multitool components through SOG and customize the toolset to your specific trip/needs. $120; 9.3 oz.; sogknives.com
