Gear Review: SofSole Airr Performance Insole

Air chambers embedded in the heel and arch and polymer gel in the forefoot put extra cushioning exactly where you need it most.

SofSole insoles were what my feet dreamed of at night—until I got the opportunity to try a pair. I’d all but given up on insoles. Other leading brands seemed overly firm and not worth the extra weight. As the name implies, SofSole insoles are designed for cushioning—which I sorely needed midway through a summer of ultramarathons and gear testing.

Air chambers embedded in the heel and arch and polymer gel in the forefoot put extra cushioning exactly where I needed it most. The Airr insoles made any pair of shoe feel like I was walking on air—because, well, I was. A Coolmax fabric cover also managed to keep them from getting stinky after months of daily abuse. Gripe: these insoles are a bit thick—more than half an inch. Make sure your shoes will accommodate them in the store if possible. Best for: anyone who suffers foot pain—prevention is a must, as conditions like plantar fasciitis are no joke. $27; 6 oz.; sofsole.com.
