Gear Review: SmartWool Lightweight Crew Baselayer

Experience all of the comfort with none of the smell with this SmartWool baselayer.

[versatile baselayer]

Our tester wore this 100-percent merino top as a solitary layer in temperatures ranging from a windy 45°F to a balmier 65°F, and he loved it so much that he didn’t take it off for four days straight (including sleeping). “It’s loose enough to be comfortable, snug enough to fit under other layers, warm enough to insulate, and breathable enough to wear in variable conditions,” he says.

It got soaked during a long uphill slog in Tasmania’s Walls of Jerusalem National Park, but it dried quickly over lunch, and kept our tester from getting chilled on an exposed ridgeline. Bonus: After four continuous days of wear, he went straight to a pub, and didn’t offend anyone’s sense of smell. $85; 8.5 oz. (m’s M); m’s S-XXL, w’s XS-XL; smartwool.com
