Gear Review: Sierra Designs Mirage 4 Tent

Camp in comfort with this spacious and weatherproof tent from Sierra Designs.

[tent]
“It’s a palace,” declares one tester, who spent two weeks in this hut-size shelter in Yellowstone. The enormous, 95-square-foot front vestibule has three doors, and there’s an additional door out of the tent’s back. Four mesh vesti windows provide awesome airflow. Bonus: The tent body hangs from the inside of the fly and can be easily removed, transforming the fly into an airy, 150-square-foot shelter with a partial floor.

Stargazers loved the ease with which the rainfly rolled back to expose a mesh roof, and only the tallest campers can’t stand straight beneath the 76-inch peak. The Mirage withstood intense weather conditions in four Western states, holding strong against winds up to 30 mph and a Yellowstone torrent that turned the campsite into a swimming pool. The setup, which requires two people, proved straightforward. $699 ($599 for 2-person version); 24 lbs. 4 oz.; sierradesigns.com
