Gear Review: Salomon XA Pro 3D Mid GTX Ultra Trail Runners

Your toes will stay warm while snowshoe running with these insulated runners.

The key to a deep-winter running shoe? Just enough—but not too much—insulation. “I was plenty warm down to the teens, even without thick socks,” said a tester after snowshoe running on Nordic trails in Breckenridge, Colorado. Credit a thin layer of foam, which instantly conformed to testers’ feet to provide warmth without awkward bulk. That, plus good breathability from the Gore-Tex-lined mesh upper, made this a great choice for high-exertion outings in cold or wet conditions.

“The 3D has good stability, support, sensitivity, and underfoot protection,” says another tester. That’s because a zigzag web of polyurethane provides support around the midfoot and heel. And the midsole pairs dual-density EVA designed for extra spring with a TPU (hard plastic) heel cup and plate for stability and bruise protection. Welcome feature: slide-lock lacing. “The shoes were a cinch to get on and off with light gloves or cold fingers—just pull and go.” $160; 1 lb. 12 oz.; m’s 7-13, w’s 5-11; salomon.com
