Gear Review: REI Spruce Peak/Nevis

Get maximum bang for your buck with this two-in-one, synthetic-fill jacket.

Get maximum bang for your buck with this two-in-one, synthetic-fill jacket. It’s a tricked out midweight puffy with PrimaLoft Eco insulation and a Pertex Microlight Eco shell, which kills winds up to about 50 mph and sheds light drizzle and wet snow.

Our tester packed the Nevis (women’s version) as her midlayer on our Icelandic ski-and-camp. “At night, it was toasty under a shell down to about 30°F,” she reports. “Come morning, I’d zip off the sleeves and hood, then layer the vest under my shell to stave off the chill at the beginning of our daily ski tours.” Fit is roomy enough for underlayers, yet not too baggy to accommodate overlayers.

Versatility tradeoff: The extra zippers add a bit of weight and bulk (it packs into its own 8 x 9 x 2-inch lumbar pocket).
