Gear Review: REI Antifreeze/Davos Jacket

-20°? No problem for this bargain heater.

[bargain warmth]

On a two-week ski-mountaineering expedition high in Kyrgyzstan’s Tien Shan, our tester grew mighty attached to her Davos (Antifreeze is the men’s version). “I stayed supertoasty, even when it got down to -20°F at 14,500 feet,” she says.

Credit overstuffed baffles full of 700-fill down, a thick (and removable) hood that’s sized to fit over a helmet, and draft-sealing cuffs. And there’s no short-changing of material because of the price: A below-the-hips cut kept our tester’s butt warm when she stopped for a snack on a snowbank. The ripstop polyester shell is reinforced along the shoulders and arms. All that, and it smooshes down to the size of a honeydew melon. $179; 1 lb. 6 oz.; m’s S-XXL, w’s XS-XL; rei.com
