Gear Review: PolarMAX Tech Waffle Crew Base Layer

Ski patrol approved

[midweight]

Our tester wore this waffle-knit polyester crew under his shell for 10-hour days patrolling Colorado’s Arapahoe Basin, then paired it with a pack and a midlayer for off-duty days skinning and skiing nearby Vail pass. After a season of use, he praised the waffle-pattern fabric, which enhances wicking and warmth (for the weight and bulk). The fabric didn’t bunch or pull under his pack and handled the long work days without losing shape. Only wish: a little more stretch in the cuffs. $35; 7.4 oz. (men’s M); men’s S-XXL, women’s XS-XL; polarmax.com
