Gear Review: Pistil Clover

A stylish hat that packs small and combats camp hair.

OK, we admit that this wool-and-acrylic hat serves more form than function, but covering up bad camp hair can be a valuable service—as our tester found while backcountry skiing in Norway, where she used the Clover to conceal sweat- and blood-matted locks (the latter from a head-bashing fall on the slopes).

“I love this cap because its warm, thick-knit fabric and short bill block out rain and light snow, but it has more style than a shapeless beanie,” she says. “It’s not really an ‘activity’ hat because it doesn’t cover your ears, but a perfect post-activity hat.” Gripe: It can lose its shape or pill with rugged use or machine-washing. $14; 2.9 oz.; pistildesigns.com
