Gear Review: Petzl Core Headlamp

A rechargeable and programmable headlamp.

Rechargeable/programmable

The Petzl Core is a rechargeable, lithium-ion-polymer battery that powers up via USB, wall outlet, or car jack—and runs your Tikka2 or Zipka2 headlamp, so you can ditch alkalines. You just slide the Core inside the battery compartment for power that “is nearly on par with disposables,” says our tester. The key? It comes with software that makes it programmable: Before you even hit the trail, you can dial in brightness settings. $40; 1 oz.; petzl.com
