Gear Review: Patagonia Super Alpine Bibs
Bibs built for the worst of conditions.
Hours of screaming winds and pellet-like snow didn’t overpower this worst-conditions-ready suit. Unlike some bibs, which trim coverage to fit like high-waisted pants, these extend high for warmth and protection. Whether ice-climbing in Colorado or making subzero starts in Alaska, our testers stayed cozy.
The three-layer Gore-Tex Pro Shell fabric provides great breathability. “I never needed to open the vents, except when skinning on mild days,” a tester reports. Chest pockets are placed high, away from pack straps, and their “pressed pleat” construction expands to hold bulky mitts—but lays flat when not in use. Internal gaiters keep out snow, and a scuff guard protects the lower leg against ski edges. Materials are bomber—as befits the price.
Tradeoff: The burly construction makes them stiffer, and a bit bulky for multiday trips.
