Gear Review: Patagonia Nine Trails Jacket

This hoodless Patagonia jacket is extremely breathable.

[most breathable]

You: Overheat in the lightest layers. Your shell: The hoodless Nine Trails, which combines windproof ripstop nylon in the front and sleeves with stretchy, breathable polyester in the back and underarms. Our crew used it while cranking up trails in Whiskeytown National Recreation Area in California.

“My back gets sweaty when I have a pack on, so at rest stops I quickly get chilly,” says one tester. “But I stayed drier in this shell, so my body temperature was more consistent.” The clean, pocketless design fits well over a light baselayer, but not much else. Bummer: It wets out fast. $99; 5 oz.; men’s XS-XL, women’s XS-XL; patagonia.com
